Dutch Gates
Dutch gates and hurdles provide a great deal of flexibility. They are generally intended to improve explosive motion. They can also be used as obstacles to play through or around.
Hurdles are typically made of metal or PVC tubing in a fixed position and size raging for 6” to 18” high and about 18” wide. They are often used speed drills. Players either run over them or hop/jump over them. To build explosiveness, players should push off with their toes as soon as they hit the ground.
Gates are almost always assembled.<>They range in height from 12” to 24” and are usually 36” wide. They can be used in all of the ways as hurdles, but the larger sizes can also be used as mini-goals and for games. I like to play a version of croquette using the 24” gates. I also like running dribbling drills using the gates as obstacles. Some gates are variable height increasing their flexibility.
Safety notes: First, always run through the gates so feet point in the opposite direction of travel. This ensures that the gate will just fall over without hurting the player. Second, the gates should not generally be taller than the player’s knees (older more experienced players may use taller gates).
