adidas Samba Millennium
The Samba Millennium ($65) is an excellent all around shoe. It is designed as an indoor, coach/trainer or referee boot. It is constructed with a soft leather upper and a gum sole. It is flexible and comfortable, but it has very little padding. It is light weight with great feel.
The Samba line contains several different boots. The base “Classic” ($50) is the least expensive and uses a simpler outsole design. The “Millennium” is the middle boot and uses an EVA mid-sole for added flexibility and comfort. The “Samba” ($75) uses softer kangaroo leather and a full gum rubber sole for added traction.
The Millennium is an updated version of the Samba designed for the modern game and modern surfaces. On indoor surfaces, it has fair grip. The partial gum sole looses some contact area to the EVA. On outdoor surfaces or grass, slipping is inevitable. The leather upper has been extremely durable, surviving hundreds of hours of training, games and every day use. At the same time, it has a good feel. The soft leather and traditional design provide a consistent kicking platform. It is both confidence inspiring and refined right up to the point that you fall on your backside. It didn’t happen often, but it was always at a bad time.
The EVA mid-sole creates a good balance between cushion and light weight. These are not running shoes and do not have much in the way of padding. They are fine for daily where and very good for walking the sideline, but I would not want to wear them for conditioning.
As we have mentioned before, we believe that players should use similar styles of boots on different surfaces (TRX FG and TRX IN or Total90 SG and Total90 IN). There is no Samba grass boot. The closest are the adidas Telstar and Copa; however, both the Telstar and Copa have indoor variants.
