FA Learning (web based training)

English soccer’s governing body is called “The Football Association” (FA) and has been one of the most influential organizations in soccer for more than 100 years. They have begun to offer on-line courses. The course selection is limited and the classes are all fairly basic.  Prices range from free to a few hundred dollars for course bundles.

The course selection includes a few free classes, some inexpensive classes ($30) and some moderately priced classes ($60). Since all of the classes are on-line, they lack the value of classroom training, student/teacher interaction, and field work. That doesn’t eliminate there value. The courses focused on team management and player psychology can be effectively delivered through this medium. Courses in player evaluation and fitness are little more than “books on tape.”  In some cases, the biggest value many be for a coach to claim “FA Certification” to justify their salary.

Like all training, knowledge is power. I applaud the FA for making these courses available to the masses. While they may not be the most effective methods for delivering training, I would encourage any coach interested in improving their abilities. Some courses may also be of value to players (e.g. Laws of the Game) to improve their football insight.  The FA also offers a variety of books and videos.  To find out more, contact the FA at
