Nike Free 5.0 Runner
The Nike Free ($100) is a unique running (5.0)/training (7.0) concept. The shoes are very light weight and very flexible. The idea behind the Free is that a stronger foot results in a better runner. The same is obviously true for soccer.
The Free is designed as a very lightweight and flexible shoe to give the impression of running in bare feet. This is definitely not for everyone and definitely not for every surface. There is not much in the way of cushion either. The outsole is composed of a series of one inch blocks. This allows the shoe to flex in any direction. The upper is made of a mesh material that breathes very well. The shoe uses a system that Nike calls the “ghillie” lacing system. It allows quick on/off for triathletes and players using these as before/after cleat shoes. It also ensures a comfortable personal fit.
We found that this shoe works very well for its intended purpose. As an indoor shoe or training shoe it has some significant weaknesses. The light weight and lack of structure do not provide any lateral support. We have also had complaints about the upper ripping with too much quick lateral movement. The lack of padding also limits this shoes usefulness for serious distance runners.
