AVID Soccer Awards 2006 “Best GK Glove”
With five nominees, the Goal Keeper Glove category had the broadest field. Competition came down to two real contenders. The competition was very tight and reader preference made the difference.
Both of our finalists are mid-priced gloves. The adidas Climaproof Carbon and the Selsport Titanium Pro-Tect are both outstanding values with retail prices well below $100.
The Climaproof gloves feature the adidas findersaver system for protection and outstanding grip. They are solid three+ season gloves that have held up well to some significant abuse. Our testers found these among the best gloves on the market and a real value with a current price around $60. It is easy to imagine purchasing two pair of these (one training, one match) for the price of a higher level glove in the same line.
The Titanium Pro-Tects are the stickiest gloves we have ever tested. They are consistent in most weather conditions, comfortable for strenuous training sessions and match level quality. The Selsport gloves also include bones in the thumb. For keepers accustomed to the adidas findersavers, this can be annoying. Fortunately, the bones are removable. The going price for the Pro-Tects is around $50 making these a steal.
“And the winner is…”
Selsport Titanium Pro-Tect
This was a toss-up until the end of November. One of our keepers, a devoted fingersaver fan, was converted to the Selsports. Readers that have used both gloves seem to agree. Testing mid-priced gloves leaves the top tier out. Both Selsport and adidas produce pro level gloves and have professional endorsements. If we had tested the top tier, the results could have been different.
