AVID Soccer Awards 2006 “Best Boot”

2006 was a year of innovation. With boots like the Tunit and Zhero changing the way we think of cleats and improvements to every major line, we knew it would be exciting. In the end, our testers voted with their wallets.

This year’s nominees ranged from a timeless standard (Nike Legend) to state of the art (Zhero) and included entries from four different manufacturers. Each nominee presented a solid argument and each had its problems.

At 7.6 oz, the Lotto Zhero Gravity is among the lightest boots ever made. The innovative laceless design and light weight definitely attracted attention. In the end, comfort won out and these ended up on the shelf.

The Puma v-Konstruct uses a new cleat pattern intended to provide more grip and better lateral movement. The kangaroo leather upper gave the v-Konstruct year round comfort and a soft feel. This boot is designed to be a direct competitor to the adidas Predator and we think it proved the point.

The adidas +f50.6 Tunit broke every rule in boot design and landed it on the AVID Soccer Awards 2006 “Innovative Product of the Year” list. To many parents, and even more players, the flexibility of changing upper, body and cleats was irresistible. This was the number one boot selected at the beginning of the season. Unfortunately, problems with cleat retention and tears in the upper left this boot on the sideline.

“And the winner is…”

The number one boot at the END of the season was the Nike Air Legend. No fancy components, no lighter than air materials, just flawless execution of a timeless design. The boot is true to size, is among the most comfortable we have tested, performs in all conditions, is available in Indoor, turn, FG and SG variants, and even has a women’s version. No less than 1/3 of our testers converted from other manufacturers to the Legends (after reading
our review, of course). This is Ronaldinho’s boot of choice, need we way more.
