adidas Tunit +F50.7
The 2nd generation Tunit starter kit ($170) keeps all of the flexibility and style of the original and improves the cleat retention system. Components are interchangeable between first and second generation.
The F50 has always been the fleet footed line for adidas. The boots are narrow and light. They are targeted at players who are more concerned with speed than power. For the power player or wider foot, look to the adidas Predator line.
The Tunit, our 2006 Innovative Product of the Year award winner, is the original “Build a Boot” system. The system consists of an upper, a chassis and cleats. The chassis fits inside the upper and the cleats screw through the upper into the chassis. The cleats cover enough of the surface area to ensure a solid combination. The uppers have a Velcro lace cover that works well and provides a smooth kicking surface.
Our starter kit included a dark shale/slime micro synthetic upper, the standard chassis, and three sets of cleats (HG, FG, SG). Each of the three cleat varieties fit a specific circumstance. Hard Ground (HG) cleats are shorter and made of a softer rubber material. Firm Ground (FG) is the standard for most players. They are slightly longer and made of a clear plastic. Soft Ground (SG) includes fewer studs, but includes caps to cover the chassis holes and help keep the boot together.
Our testers included players familiar with the first generation Tunits. All testers felt the boot has improved over the previous generation. These are a top flight boot and performed as such. One state "The second generation of the Tunits felt more comfortable and they were more snug to your foot. The Velcro on it is better because you can get all the lace in it easier." They are light weight and comfortable. The micro synthetic upper can be a bit sweaty in very active conditions. To accommodate this, adidas makes both a climalite and natural leather upper (for an additional $60).
The biggest complaints about the first generation were cleat retention and the quality of the upper. We had no problems with the upper in our testing, which included months of practice and High School level games. We did; however, lose one of the SG plugs. Only one of our testers worried about keeping the cleats tight. Another tester mentioned that the system seems to work better than the first generation. His review stated "The endurance of the studs seemed to last longer... since I have had them I haven't lost a stud." Over all, the Tunits are still the most versatile boot on the market and a true innovation.
