Is Beckham worth it?

Now that the dust has settled and we have some hard numbers, it is finally safe to ask the real question.  Can the most famous Footballer in the world raise the level of awareness in America?

The first question: “Is he worth it” can be answered fairly easily.  Now that we have hard numbers $27 million over five years equates to $5.4 million/year.  That is not far out of place for US players in Europe or even the top players in the MLS.  His experience and drawing power can justify most of that salary.  Even in his 30s, Becks can still be a devastating player.  His free kicks are responsible for his resurgence with Real Madrid.

The second question: “Will he raise the level of awareness in America” can only be answered over time.  For the first 18 months, Posh (wife Victoria) will probably draw as much attention as Becks.  The stadiums will be full each time David comes to town, but unless he raises the level of play it will be a passing fad.  This isn’t the first time an aging superstar has come to America.  Does any body remember when Pele came to town?  He was supposed to save soccer.  Instead, the league folded a few years later.

Beckham is not going to bankrupt the MLS.  He is also not going to save it.  Would I spend $27 million to have a player of Beckham’s quality.  Yes I would, but he better bring leadership, experience, heart and silverware!  His presence will bring some notoriety to the MLS, but only a higher quality game will keep the fans in the seats.  Let’s face it.  The MLS can be boring compared to Central/South American Football.  The MLS does not have the pace or precision of the European game.  If Beckham brings those things and raises the expectation of every fan, then we will have our Beautiful Game.
