Kelme Betis Underlayer Top
The Betis ($25) underlayer is a tight wicking layer intended to be worn under a jersey or t-shirt. These garments are designed as a second skin to provide comfort and protection.
Underlayer garments are generally constructed of light weight elastic fabrics that fit tightly against the skin. Tops, such as the Betis, are designed to wick moisture away from the skin. This helps to regulate temperature and provide comfort. In cold weather, they provide an extra layer of insulation and remove sweat. In warm weather, they keep the outer layer from clinging and provide a breathable layer.
Bottoms are often referred to as "slider shorts" for the protection they provide. In addition to providing wicking and insulation, they also provide some abrasion resistance and muscle support. Most garments are constructed without anything additional; however, some varieties are padded (keeper, football, rugby, baseball) for added protection.
For those favoring oversized garments, these will appear to be very small. The large red garment that we tested is about the size of an adult small t-shirt. The elastic nature of the fabric allowed our 6’3" +200lb tester to wear it comfortably. It also worked well for a much smaller tester regularly wearing adult mediums. Players used to larger sizes may require time to become accustomed to the feel of a tight layer against the skin. Most of our testers have worn this type of garment for years, so it was not an issue.
The Kelme Betis was tested in both warm and cold conditions. It was tested in the gym, on road runs, and in a game. In all circumstances, it performed as well as the major competitor at a similar price point. The Kelme Betis received 6 out of 10 only because this is a very basic garment.
