Umbro Centauri Training Ball
The Centauri ($30) is training level ball constructed of match level materials. This Umbro ball has an interesting graphic. It is designed for all conditions.
The Centauri is constructed with a polyurethane cover and a latex bladder. These are standard materials for match balls, unfortunately, the Centauri is strictly training level. The The graphics are a combination of the Umbro diamond and the three legged twist seen in the image. The graphics are screened onto the surface and have shown signs of scuffing and marring. The cover itself has held up well.
The ball does have a good touch. It is an all weather ball, but becomes slick when wet. When properly inflated, the ball is very hard and will be uncomfortable to head.
The Cetauri is constructed using Umbro's Spherical Circumference Control (SCC). SCC is a new process designed to use heat and pressure to keep the shape. It uses a honeycomb material in the casing to facilitate this. Unfortunately, our example had balance problems. We inflated the ball to 70% for 24 hours to give it time to gain its shape. After inflating it completely, the ball remains noticeably out of balance. The shape is visibly off. Other than that, it is a solid performer. At current prices, it is an adequate training ball.
