Coaching Soccer Tactics (Book)
Phil Wymer's book, Coaching Soccer Tactics is a great deal of good information in a very poor presentation. The book includes some interesting insights into how to teach team tactics and how to approach the game. It is also spot on in questioning basic axioms in youth soccer.
Coaching Soccer Tactics is a self published book and shows it. Our 2005 edition contains numerous spelling and grammatical errors. Much of the text is poorly written and difficult to read. The book also contains a number of graphics, comments and inserts that are unrelated or unnecessary to the text. It seems as if their main purpose is to increase the page count, rather than provide additional clarity. Unfortunately, this all distracts from what is otherwise solid insight into the game.
This 243 page book contains chapters on using time, space and the pitch; defensive tactics; attacking tactics; formation, shape and communication; analysis; and tip and preparations. It also includes worksheets, a glossary and numerous quotes (most gathered from other sources). This is written more as a workbook than a reference manual. There are a number of situations presented for analysis with possible answers. Unfortunately, again, the presentation takes away from the material. Over all, this is a reasonable addition to a coaching library. The topics discussed here are not often addressed in other materials and are important. I hope that the next edition will receive a professional editorial treatment.
