AVID Soccer Awards 2007 "Best Boot"
The boots of 2007 were mainly advancements of existing models and concepts. Both Nike and adidas advanced their flagship models. Umbro and Puma updated solid performers. In general, the best got better and we all benefit.
Like last year, our testers voted with their wallets and with their smiles. Unlike last year, the winner was not nearly as overwhelming. Puma, Kelme, Diadora and Reebok didn't even get nominations. Umbro produced one of the most comfortable boots of the year, but didn't stand out in any other way. Nike updated their Vapor and Total90 lines. adidas fixed the major problem with the Tunits and produced the best Predator yet.
Here is how the stacked up:
- adidas +F50.7 Tunit - 2006's "Innovative Product of the Year" had one major flaw: The cleats came loose during during play. This turned into a fatal flaw last year. The current version makes significant strides to solving this problem. That makes the Tunit one of the most flexible, usable boots available. Unfortunately, variety isn't that important. Players told AVID Soccer that consistency was more important than tunability.
- Umbro X Boot III - Using the most advanced materials, this boot proved comfortable, stable and solid. Unfortunately, lack of local availability and limited testing left it third in our results.
- Nike Total90 Laser - A huge advancement over last year's Total90 boot, the Laser ranked first is sales, but missed in loyalty. Yellow and black boots filled the pitch soon after their release, but number of players that wanted a second pair dropped quickly.
"... and the winner is..."
Our testers absolutely raved about the adidas Predator Absolute. By far the best boot adidas has ever made, our testers rated it the best boot ever. Combining the best kangaroo leather upper with the innovative power pulse inserts it became the platform of choice. Just like last year, the FIFA player of the year agrees with us. This is Kaka's boot of choice (along with Beckham, Messi and Gerrard).

Thank you for you very informative article. I was glad to see comparisons to last year, in addition to each other. Thank you for your time and attention to help coaches and players, alike, to make more informed decisions.
