Franklin Dual Action Pump
Every coach and almost every club level or higher player should carry a pump with them to practice. The Franklin Dual Action Pump ($6) is an inexpensive item to throw in your bag. This is a micro-pump designed for a team pack or pitch bag.
The dual action in the name refers to the air stroke. Using one way valves, the pump is designed to push air on both piston strokes. This helps make a small bag pump like this fill a ball much faster. Our transparent orange and black pump filled an empty ball to regulation pressure in about two minutes. We were pleased that such an inexpensive item worked as well as it did. On the other hand, the construction of the valves is just plain cheap. The plastic case is brittle and would be crushed easily. The needle stores in the pump and could break in the bag.
Let's face it. You are going to get what you pay for. If you are a trainer or coach that is filling 5 or 6 balls at a time, your arm will fall off before you get them up to pressure. If you are doing it several times a month, this little pump is not going to last through the season. If you just need something as a backup or sideline boost, then this is it. The Franklin pump is designed for occasional use and at less than $6, that is good enough.
The pump comes with one needle and does not have room to store additional ones. At AVID Soccer, we use old mint tins (like Altoids) to store small items like needles, game coins and tournament pins. It protects the needles and they smell minty fresh.
