Microsoft Zune 80

When Microsoft first released the Zune MP3 player, it was to thunderous yawns.  The second generation was released around the same time as the iPod Touch and seemed outdated.  That is a short sighted view.  Our Zune 80 ($250) has some features that set it apart.

Our Zune 80 is a limited edition red player with a Zune Originals Tattoo.  80 gigabytes of data is enough to store more than enough entertainment for a weekend tournament.  We loaded about 27 hours worth of music and 22 hours worth of video.  Because the Zune supports Windows Media Center files, any TV program recorded on a MCE computer can be played on the Zune.  All of the Zune family include wifi connections.  In the Zune 80, this can be used to sync with media on the computer, but it can also be used to share media with nearby Zune users.  The licensing allows a user to download a song and play it a few times before it must be purchased or deleted.

The gen 2 Zune uses a touch pad similar to that on a laptop; however, the software allows the user to swipe the pad and inertia keeps the menu rolling.  It is an intuitive interface.  The Zune also features an FM radio and customizable appearance.  We used the AVID Soccer logo as our background.  In addition, Zune Originals allows for a permanent customization.  Laser etched tattoos are available for an additional $10.

The 80 includes Microsoft's premium headphones.  These are about $50 when purchased separately.  They are a definite improvement in sound quality, noise isolation and comfort over the standard headphones provided with most MP3 players.  Over all, the Zune 80 looks and sounds great, provides easy navigation, supports wifi sharing/syncing and has enough space for lots of music and videos.  The radio is great for when you just want something different.  The screen is noticably better than the iPod.  At $250, it isn't for everyone, but it is a solid alternative to Apple.

I would have never considered a Zune before Avidsoccer introduced it. It sounds like it has some great features at a competitive price. Thanks for the heads-up!
