How to Stay Fit & Healthy on the Road (Book Review)

Whether it is for our jobs, schools, teams or tournaments, most of us spend some time on the road.  Dr. Jo's guide ($10) is a series of hints and suggestions that help use the resources available when you are away from home.

The guide is intended to for the frequent or persistent traveler as noted by the subtitle The Ultimate Health Guide for Road Warriors.  There are a few common sense suggestions that could be useful on a tournament weekend and for traveling in general.  It should be treated more like a reference manual than a cover to cover book.  The book covers:

  • Fueling the engine covers proper hydration and eating habits.  There is some reference material for meal nutrition and a few restaurant chains.
  • Getting your body in shape delves into hotel fitness and building a workout plan for long or frequent trips.
  • Setting the snooze control targets sleep.  There are tips about ways to get to sleep on the road and the benefit of power naps.
  • Fine tuning your engine provides help with common traveler illnesses.  Dr. Jo suggests a combination of lifestyle activities and homeopathic supliments.
  • Putting the brakes on stress starts with preflight preparedness and includes common methods for identifying stress.
  • Getting your wheels in gear is actually about packing for the trip.
  • Passing the safety inspection covers issues related to safety.  Topics include locking bags, checking the hotel room, dealing with medical situations and foreign travel.
  • Staying balanced is all about harmonizing work and home life.
  • References are a list of web sites and resources related to travel.

I have coached on both coasts and traveled through Europe.  In fact I have been on the road for the better part of eleven years.  Much of this book is common sense to the seasoned traveler, but there are some good hints for the first time road warrior.  It fits the business traveler better than the player; however, it will be useful to the ODP, Premier, or college player (and parents) that is beginning to travel frequently.  It provides very little value to the family that is away for one tournament weekend a month.

Dr. Joanne V. Lichten, PhD, RD is the former Chief Nutrition Officer for Burger King and is the CEO of Dr Jo's.  She is a frequent lecturer and author of several other books published through Nutrifit Publications.
