EA FIFA 2009 (XBOX 360)
There are two soccer series that have battled for years. Electronic Arts' FIFA ($60) series has lagged behind Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer... until now.
Like most sports games, the publishers biggest challenge is getting people to buy a game they already have. Each year, there are minor improvements in the graphics and game play. The addition of on-line play has also upped the ante considerably.
In FIFA 2008, shot accuracy was the most important refinement. Unfortunately tactics were limited to wing play and quick tricks to beat the defenders. 2009 added significantly better AI making passing far more important. Played on a 1080p plasma with an HDMI input, the graphics are remarkable. The game play is realistic and the team play can be adicting.
On-line play has also been significantly improved. EA reports that on-line play is up more than 300% over the 2008 version. The two biggest improvements to the game are Live Season and Ultimate Team. Live Season ties the game players form and injuries to the actual player. Through Live, EA downloads player statistics affecting on-line play. Game players receive a bonus when their real world counterparts play well, and a penalty when they do not. Real world injuries are also reflected in the game. Ultimate Team is an expansion to the game that adds new significant downloadable content including new achievements in the form of trading cards. Game players can create their own team including the look of the players. Gamers can challenge others on-line in tournaments and on-on-one.
