Sawol Soccer Classic Match Ball

Claiming to be a match level ball, the Classic ($30) falls a bit short.  However, it is above the quality standard of the average training ball.  The Sawol ball is a good value and worth a look.

AVID Soccer Equipment Sawol Soccer LogoSawol (pronounced say wahl) is a new soccer company based in Vermont.  They offer a few apparel products and the Classic Match Ball.  For now, clothing items are limited to a few shirts and jackets, but more may be on the way.

This 30 panel ball follows most of the rules for this price class.  There are two combined panels to fit the logo.  Graphics are standard black/white with gold accents.  The casing is constructed of a glossy polyurethane with a butyl valve.  The cover is water resistant, but can be slippery when wet.

Our usual testing procedures call for an inflate then rest period.  We inflate the ball to the low end of the recommended pressure and then allow the ball to sit for a week.  At the end of the week, we inflate the ball to it max suggested pressure.  This should allow any wrinkles from shipping and storage to relax and ensure the ball is spherical.  It also allows us to test the air retention.

The Classic has a good shape and balance.  Touch and feel of the ball is on par with most high end training or low end match balls and is better than average for this price point.  The cover has held up well to abrasion, but the gold graphic will wear faster than the black.  The cover has also held on to some of the wrinkles.  The stitching is sub-par for a match ball and indicates likely wear points.

In the end, the Sawol Classic is a fair value.  It rates match level for recreational league play, but not club or high school ball.  It would make a decent training ball.  The low pressure and stitching keep this ball from reaching higher levels.
